2024 Amsterdam Light Festival
In 2024, the designer Maria Suarez and I decided to take part in the Amsterdam Light Festival.
Every year, the canals host some stunning light installations from renowned artists and design studios.
We’re very proud that two of our concepts made it to the final round. We collaborated with product designers, lighting experts and producers to bring our visions to life.
The brief for this year’s edition was: "Legacy for the future: How will we be remembered?"
Following is an overview of our two installations, Garden of the Sea and Leap into the Unknown.
Several coral clusters floating across Amsterdam’s canals will go through changing states to show the impact we inflict upon nature.
From bleached lifeless tones, the corals will slowly come back to life with their regained colour, conveying a message of hope.
Working with product designers and lighting specialists we decided that every coral cluster would be fixed to a floating platform, slightly submerged allowing the light-up branches to reflect on the surface.
The LEDs will be embedded within the hollow branches creating a diffused and organic lightening. And the textured coral branches would be achieved thanks to recycled resin to minimise the footprint of our installation.
An anthropomorphic statue with abstract, yet human features fearlessly leaps through a portal of light; symbolising the passage between the past and whatever lies ahead.
Our ‘faceless hero’ is showing no sign of hesitation as he leaps into the light, conveying a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
